Install IPTV on Windows and Mac in 10 steps
Route one: install Smarters for desktop
Support sends the download link for the desktop edition on WhatsApp. Run the installer, accept the prompts and open it. This is the route to choose if you want the on-demand library laid out properly with posters, seasons and resume points rather than one long list.
Sign in with Xtream Codes
Choose the Xtream Codes option, give the account any name, then enter the server address, username and password exactly as sent. A keyboard makes this the easiest platform of all to type on, so if a login is failing elsewhere, test it here first to rule out typing errors.
Let the sections build
The first sign-in downloads the channel list, the guide and the library. On a computer this is quick. You should end up with Live, Films and Series sections plus a catch-up area for channels that support replay.
Route two: open the playlist in VLC
In VLC, choose Media, Open Network Stream, paste your M3U address and press Play. VLC shows a flat playlist with no guide and no sections, but it is reliable, free and already installed on many machines. It is the quickest way to confirm a stream plays at all.
Route three: use the web player
Where installing software is not allowed, as on a work laptop, open the web player in a browser and enter the same Xtream details. Nothing is installed and nothing is left behind. Playback is slightly less smooth than a native app, which is the trade.
Check the Irish and UK channels
Whichever route you took, open the Ireland group and start RTE, Virgin Media and TG4, then the UK group. Doing this on a computer first is a good way to test the service before spending time setting up the television.
Choose subtitles and audio tracks
During playback, open the subtitle and audio menus to see what the source carries. On-demand films often have several tracks; live channels rarely do. VLC exposes these under the Subtitle and Audio menus, and Smarters shows them in the playback overlay.
Use a wired connection for 4K
A laptop on Wi-Fi at the far end of the house is the usual reason a 4K stream stutters. Plug in a cable where possible, or move closer to the router and use the 5 GHz band. Close video calls and cloud backups before a long film.
Put it on the television with HDMI
A cable from the laptop to the television turns any computer into a perfectly good IPTV box for an evening. Set the television as the audio output as well as the display, or you will get picture on the big screen and sound from the laptop speakers.
Keep the login somewhere sensible
Copy the server address, username and password into a password manager rather than leaving them in a chat you will scroll past. You will need them again on every other device, and retyping from a photograph of a screen is how most typing errors start.
Troubleshooting Windows and Mac: quick fixes for common errors
Windows blocks the installer
SmartScreen warns about installers it has not seen often. If you downloaded the file from the link support sent, choose More info and Run anyway. If you found the file somewhere else, do not run it, and ask support for the correct link.
VLC opens but nothing plays
Check the M3U address was pasted whole, with no line break in the middle, which is what usually happens when copying from a chat window. Try the address in a browser: it should download a playlist file rather than show an error page.
The picture tears or stutters on the computer
Turn on hardware acceleration in the player settings, or switch it off if it is already on, since both faults occur depending on the graphics driver. Update the graphics driver, and close browser tabs playing video in the background.
The login works on the computer but not on the television
That is good news: the details are right and the problem is typing on the television keyboard. Use a phone app as a keyboard for the set, or double-check for a capital letter left on and a trailing space at the end of the password.
Sound comes from the laptop, not the television
Windows and macOS do not always switch audio when an HDMI cable is connected. Choose the television as the output device in the sound settings. On Windows this is the speaker icon in the taskbar; on a Mac it is under Sound in System Settings.
The web player will not load
Browser extensions that block scripts are the usual cause. Try a private window with extensions disabled. Corporate laptops sometimes filter streaming traffic entirely, in which case nothing will fix it on that network.
Everything plays but the guide is missing in VLC
VLC does not display programme guide data at all; that is a limitation of the player rather than a fault. If you want a guide, use the Smarters desktop app or the web player instead.

Which route should I choose on a computer?

Does it work on a Mac?

Is a computer a good permanent setup?
It works, but a stick or box costing under a hundred euro is more pleasant for nightly viewing: a proper remote, instant start-up and no laptop tied up. Use the computer to test the service, then decide on hardware for the television.
Can I record on a computer?
VLC can record a stream to a file, and some desktop players offer a recording button. Bear in mind recordings of live channels take up a great deal of space quickly. For catching up on programmes, the catch-up section is simpler than recording.
Does using a computer count as one of my screens?
Yes. Every simultaneous stream uses one screen regardless of the device. A one-screen plan playing on a laptop will stop if someone presses play on the television, which is the most common reason people upgrade to two screens.
Is the web player safe to use on a shared machine?
It leaves your login in the browser, so sign out and clear the session afterwards on any machine that is not yours. Never save the details in a shared browser profile, and never leave the WhatsApp message open on a work computer.
Why is 4K harder on a laptop than on a television?
Laptops are usually further from the router, run on Wi-Fi, and have other software competing for bandwidth and processor time. A cable and a restart fix most of it. The screen is also small enough that the FHD stream looks identical in practice.
