Install IPTV on Android TV in 10 steps

1. Open Google Play on the television

   From the home screen, find the Play Store among the apps. On Google TV devices it may sit behind the Apps tab rather than on the main row. Sign in with a Google account if the device has not been set up yet, since Play will not install anything without one.

2. Install TiViMate or IPTV Smarters Pro

   Search for TiViMate if live television and a grid guide are what you want, or IPTV Smarters Pro if the film and series library is the main draw. Both are free to install. Plenty of households end up with both, because they read the same login and each is better at a different job.

3. Add your playlist through Xtream Codes

   Open the player and choose to add a playlist, then pick the Xtream Codes option rather than M3U. Enter the server address, username and password exactly as WhatsApp sent them. TiViMate calls this Add playlist, Xtream Codes; Smarters calls it Login with Xtream Codes API. The wording differs, the details do not.

4. Wait for the channel list and guide to load

   The first load pulls in several thousand channels and a full programme guide, which takes a minute or two on most connections. Let it finish before judging anything. TiViMate shows a progress bar; Smarters simply lands on its home screen once the sections are ready.

5. Check the Irish and UK groups first

   Open the Ireland group and confirm RTE, Virgin Media and TG4 start cleanly, then do the same for the UK group. This is the check worth doing before you spend time on anything else, because these are the channels the household will actually open every evening.

6. Hide the groups you will never watch

   In TiViMate, open Settings, Playlists, your playlist, then Groups, and untick everything irrelevant to your home. Smarters offers a similar option under its playlist settings. A list trimmed from thirty groups to six turns the remote into something pleasant to use.

7. Build a favourites list

   Long-press a channel and add it to favourites. Keep it short: the Irish channels, the UK ones, your sport, a news channel and whatever the children watch. Put favourites first in the player settings so it is the list that opens when the app starts.

8. Correct the guide offset if times look wrong

   If programmes appear an hour out, open the playlist settings and adjust the EPG time shift until the current programme lines up with the clock. Android devices occasionally sit on the wrong time zone after setup, so check the device clock as well while you are there.

9. Plug in a network cable where you can

   Most Android boxes and the Nvidia Shield have an Ethernet port, and using it is the single best thing you can do for live sport. Where the television is far from the router, a powerline adapter usually beats upgrading the broadband plan. On a stick without a port, at least choose the 5 GHz band.

10. Set a PIN over adult categories if children use the TV

    Both players can lock groups behind a code. In TiViMate it sits under parental control in the playlist settings, in Smarters under Settings, Parental Control. Lock what is unsuitable and leave the children group open, then repeat on every device they use, since the setting lives on the device rather than the account.

Troubleshooting Android TV: quick fixes for common errors

Google Play cannot find TiViMate

A few older Android boxes run a stripped Play Store, or a version of Android too old for the current release. Check Settings, About for the Android version. Where Play genuinely does not list it, support can send an installer file and you can sideload it as you would on a Fire TV Stick.

The playlist loads but every channel fails to play

This usually means the login is fine and the streams are not reachable from your connection. Test the same details on mobile data using a phone. If they play there, the problem is the home line, and support can issue a different server address to try.

The guide stays empty after several minutes

Force an EPG refresh in the playlist settings rather than waiting. If it is still blank, the device clock may be wrong, which can make the player discard the data entirely. Set the date and time to automatic in the Android settings and reload.

The picture stutters only on 4K channels

That is bandwidth rather than a fault. Switch to the FHD version of the same channel, which needs roughly a third as much, and connect by cable if you can. On a shared connection at peak time, FHD on a large television looks perfectly good and never pauses.

The remote scrolls past channels too fast

Most Android remotes repeat keys quickly. In TiViMate, reduce the scrolling speed under Settings, Appearance. Trimming groups and building a favourites list helps far more than any setting, because a shorter list needs less scrolling in the first place.

The app reopens at the top of the list every time

Set the player to start on favourites or on the last channel watched. In TiViMate this is under Settings, General, and in Smarters under its own start-up options. It is a small change that removes a daily annoyance.

Audio is out of sync with the picture

Try the audio delay setting in the player first, then change the audio track if the channel offers more than one. If every channel drifts, the device is struggling: use the FHD stream, close background apps and restart. A box with more memory fixes it permanently.
