Where Irish Law Stands on IPTV

The technology itself is ordinary and legal. IPTV is how RTE Player, the Virgin Media app and every other broadcaster app already reach your screen. What the law cares about is licensing: whether whoever transmits a channel holds the rights to do so in this country.

In Ireland, copyright sits under the Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000 and the EU directives it implements. Rights holders here have also used the courts to obtain blocking orders against services and servers, which is why some streams disappear without notice. Viewers are not untouchable, though: in March 2026 the High Court ordered a payments app to hand Sky the names and addresses of 304 customers of resellers. That describes how things have gone, not a promise about any case.

This is also what the phrase dodgy box refers to here: a streaming box sold already loaded with software or subscriptions to unlicensed content. The box itself is legal hardware. What makes it a problem is what has been installed and sold with it.
